objectives of the plan for the development of mineral resources in Cameroon. In the domain, we can mention the following projects:• Geological mapping and mineral exploration for the scale up of map surveys, and in so doing, provide more pieces of information in the existing geological infrastructure;• Study and synthesis of the continental sedi- mentary basins for the exploitation of their potential in matters of conventional hydrocar- bons (the Logone-Birni and Mamfe basins); as well as the geological and tectonic comprehen- sive study, aiming at providing necessary new concepts and models for a geological and mining research adapted to modern techniques and technologies;• Forecasting of natural disasters of endogenous or exogenous origin through the monitoring of seismic and volcanic activity (surveillance of Mount Cameroon).HYDROLOGYHydrological research focuses on the develop- ment of knowledge in all areas water sciences relating to the physical environment and the necessary data collection for the achievement of various development projects. The acquisition of hydrological data relies on a pretty good well- structured national hydrometric network, which has about a hundred hydrometric stations spread over the five great hydrographical basins in Cameroon (Lake Chad, Niger, Sanaga, Congo and Coastal Rivers). These data allow the quantitative and qualitative assessment of water available for a development and management of water resource, be it drin- king water for people, agricultural, industrial or energy production. The IRGM also does research on the characteri- zation and monitoring of lakes, natural and arti- ficial pondages as well as the high-risk areas of water origin, cartography and monitoring of groundwater. They develop knowledge on hydro-climatic and eco-hydrological changes and even impact assessments.ENERGYThe control of energy resources and latest energy technologies is a challenge whose knock-on effect on the domestic economy is priceless. It comes with:• Non conventional energies (the new and renewable energies). The IRGM is responsible for doing research with the view of identifying, characterizing and developing energy resources as solar energy, biomass, windmill and geothermal energy;Mr Joseph Victor HELL Managing Director• Conventional energies (nuclear energy). The Institute does studies for the mastery and peaceful use of nuclear energy. They equally put a lot to increase the mastery of radiological protection techniques by the users and promote the transfer and use of nuclear technologies within industrial and hospital milieus.A FEW CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENTSResearch activities mainly conducted by the IRGM focus on the improvement of knowledge with regard to geological, hydrological and energy resources all over Cameroon for their mastery, management and their space and tem- poral monitoring. Results from this research are in the form of databases, prototypes or biblio- graphical documents such as articles, chroni- cles, directories, maps, monographs, theses, reports, etc. These results, converted into scientific informa- tion (knowledge) offer theoretical or purely book knowledge on the nature of resources, their phy- sical, chemical or dynamic characteristics, whe- reas the technological productions (know-how) include all technical means (methods, pro- cesses, formulas, tools, instrumentation, etc.), which can be implemented for the purpose of exploitation and economic valorisation of the natural resources for the development and improvement of people’s living conditions. Using the results is an expression of the primor- dial role of the research made by the IRGM in any process of preparation and decision making, both in business and investment as well as in the achievement of land use projects, hence the importance of interaction between Research and Development nLES ATOUTS ECONOMIQUES DU CAMEROUN151
