158ROAD NETWORKTo absorb its deficit in terms of road infrastruc- tures, Cameroon undertook a few years back a vast programme of construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of the national road network. Currently, Cameroon has an urban and interur- ban road network of nearly 60 000 km consis- ting of asphalted and dirt roads.CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS IN CAMEROONIn addition to the highways and urban roads, road classification, as set up by presidential decree No 79/093 of the 21st of March 1979, falls in four categories:• The national roads that basically link the Regions’ headquarters to Yaounde the capital town, and Cameroon to neighbouring countries are the backbone of the network.• Regional roads link within the country the various Divisions.• Divisional roads link within a Division the Sub- divisions to the divisional headquarters.• Rural roads serve rural areas, plantations and local industrial zones. They allow to link production areas to the local markets or marketing of centres.• The rest of non-classified network is under the responsibility of development companies (SODE- COTON, CDC, SOCAPALM) or decentralized territorial authorities.NATIONAL ROAD NETWORKThe national road network at public expense is now nearly 122,108 km long with 7,000 km of asphalted roads, 21,490 km of main roads network and nearly 100,243 km of rural network.
