239Animal Ranching and FishingINTRODUCTIONIn 2014, the added value of the livestock sub- sector grew by 5.7% while that of the fishing grew by 2.7% compared to 2013. The increase in production is due largely to the success of the agropoles programme that was launched by the government in 2012. The programme, whose pilot phase was completed in 2014, aims at pro- viding solutions to the structural constraints that hinders development in the sectors of agriculture, fishing and breeding. Out of the 16 functional agropoles, 14 have received government fun- ding amounting CFAF 1.7 billion in 2014.BREEDINGCATTLEIn 2014, with 8.7% growth rate, the cattle popu- lation stood at 6.3 million head. The amount of meat after slaughter increased from 92,163 tons in 2013 to 102 572 tons. The production improvement actions focused essentially on: the intensification of vaccination campaigns against major animal disease inclu- ding the experimental phase of vaccination against FMD; capacity building in practicingartificial insemination; intensification of SODEPA’s activities and breeding stations transformed since 2013 into seed farms; development of forage crop. In the first half of 2015, meat production is estimated at 31,132 tons, a decrease by 38% compared to the same period of last year.SMALL RUMINANTSThe herd of small ruminants in 2014 experienced an increase by 3.3% in the number of sheep and a decline of 1.7% in the number of goats. The quantities of meat produced are respectively 25 341 tons and 12 833 tons.Actions going on in the sector include: the conti- nuing fight against animal diseases with the acquisition of 1.8 million vaccine doses for the prevention of plague in closed containments; set- ting up in Yaounde of a mobile small ruminants’ abattoir; support for producer organizations through training in livestock management pro- gram; support in equipment production and ease of access to efficient animal equipment. In the first half 2015, the small ruminants’ meat produc- tion experienced a drop by 13.6% on the same period a year ago.LES ATOUTS ECONOMIQUES DU CAMEROUN
