260LES ATOUTS ECONOMIQUES DU CAMEROUN• Strengthening the institutional and regulatory framework for promotion of handicrafts and ope- rational rationalization of the National Handicrafts Council;• Capacity building in the field of handicrafts and capacity building of networks of social eco- nomy organizations in place, in cooperation with professional handicraft organizations and part- ners in order to improve the quality of their pro- ducts that must comply with international stan- dards;• Support for migration of informal production units (IPU) to handicraft and micro-enterprises, including the establishment of counsel registers recording craftsmen for the migration of artisans and small entrepreneurs from the informal to the formal sector.Yet, handicraft has remained for some time a major concern of public authorities. Notably, the implementation of a proactive policy, through the creation in 2004 of the Ministry of Small and Medium Sized-Enterprises, Social Economy and Handicrafts. The organisation of the ministry, published in March 2005 sheds new light.It appears that the management of Social Economy and Crafts is responsible for the prepa- ration and the implementation of government policy on development of social economy and handicrafts, among others; while the Sub direc- tion of handicraft professions will deal specifi- cally with the implementation of government policy on the development of handicrafts.Industry professionals have welcomed the new direction that takes into account problems facedThe new Douala handicrafts hallby handicrafts. After the institutional framework, the various actors must create conditions for take- off of the sector. According to statistics of the National Corps of Artisans of Cameroon (CNAC) there are more than 35,000 artisans in the ten regions of the country.YAOUNDE NOW HASITS INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONIn order to promote national handicrafts and to promote exchanges between the Cameroon craftsmen and their foreign counterparts, the Ministry of Small and Medium Size Enterprises, Social Economy and Handicraft organized in January 2008 the first international exhibition of handicrafts of Cameroon. This particularly highlighted meeting was run under the patro- nage of the first lady of Cameroon, Chantal Biya. Many distinguished guests like the Congolese world-renowned sculptor Alfred LiyoloIt participated.The 2nd international exhibition of handicrafts of Cameroon (SIARC) was organized in January 2010 in Yaoundé. It saw the participation of 500 Cameroon craftsmen and a hundred foreign craftsmen. The 3rd SIARC was held from 23 January to 3 February 2012 in Yaoundé on “Cameroon crafts: quality and positioning in the international market."The opportunity helped highlight Cameroon Artisan label in compliance with international marketing standards. The 4th SIARC was held from January 22 to February 3, 2014 in Yaounde. As for the fifth, it was held in April 2016 in Yaoundé.
