The arriving visitor in Cameroon will surely appre- ciate Mount Cameroon’s charms with its slopes full of rare vegetable species. Furthermore, Limbe and Kribi beaches, which count among the most beau- tiful in the world, welcome sunbathing lovers. Tourists attracted by the forest as for them, will enjoy visiting pygmies camping and their life style where people still live fishing, hunting and picking fruits.CLIMATEStretched out from Lake Chad to the surroundings of the Equator, at latitude 11°, Cameroon offers a picture of almost all intertropical types of climates.Sizeable reliefs and proximity to sea bring in slight mountainous and coastal differences.CLIMATIC FACTORSTEMPERATURESHigh temperatures, increasingly growing from the south to the north (Yaoundé 24°, Kousseri 30°) and showing annual average differences which move the same way.RAINFALLRainfall diminish from the coast toward the inner land, and from the south to the north with altitude (Kribi 3 000mm, Kousseri 500mm water per year).AIR MASSESThere are two types of air masses in Cameroon: the monsoon or south-west trade wind (humid and unsettled) and the harmattan or north-east trade wind (settled and dry) situated on either side of the Equator. These air masses are encounteredalongside the intertropical front, then they move at altitude causing rains to fall during the boreal summer on the one hand, and dry season during the boreal winter on the other hand. Climatic fac- tors are partly responsible for the climate variety of the country. Thus three climatic areas are found in Cameroon:Equatorial areaEquatorial area stretches out in the south up to latitude 6° north and is further divided into 4 seasons “gui- nean" type, at 25°c average temperature. It equally has 2 maximum rains in September, and March-April then finally, a “Cameroonian” type particularly humid and hot, with abundant and incessant rains.Sudanian areaThe humid tropical sudanian area stretches out from 7° to almost latitude 10° north. Here we distinguish the classical sudanian type (Benoue basin) with high average temperatures, less than 1m rainfalls and a 6 months dry season; equally we have the sudan-guinean type situa- ted at Ngaoundere altitude, with its fresh 22° average temperature, abundant rains which fall from March to November and a 5-month dry season.Sudan-sahelian areaThe sudan-sahelian area is different from the previous one by its perceptible diminishing rain- fall and its dry season that lasts less than 7 months. In the north of latitude 11° north, you have the Chad plain, which is an almost com- plete dried region with its reduced 3-month rainy season. The beaches of Cameroonian which matter among the most beautiful to the worldLES ATOUTS ECONOMIQUES DU CAMEROUN27
