RESEARCHINSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT - IRADCreated in 1996, the Institute of Agricultural Research forrue Joseph Essono Balla P.O Box : 1857 - YAOUNDÉTel:(237)222201508/222217052 Fax :(237) 222 20 18 54www.iradcameroun.org Email : Cameroun@ird.frDevelopment (IRAD) is growth in Cameroon ...SCIENCE AT THE SERVICE OF GROWTHBasically, IRAD is built on two technical pillars: the scientific research department and the deve- lopment and innovation department. The Scientific Research Department is the primary technical support of work within the Institute. As such, it is primarily responsible for coordinating the development of research programs; for follo- wing up all scientific activities, ensuring cohe- rence of the actions of various competent bodies in programming and execution of research activi- ties; for controlling and ensuring the monitoring- evaluation of projects and programmes underta- ken with the research-funding partners; and finally for taking all necessary steps for the inte- gration of all the resources generated by research activities in the accounts of the Institute. The scientific research department hosts and manages the research system consisting of the fol- lowing five scientific coordination:THE SCAC: ANNUAL CROPSThe Scientific Coordination in charge of Annual Crops works for the development of technologies to improve food security and poverty alleviation of small farmers and operators in Cameroon. It accomplishes the goal by conducting the diagno- sis of farmers’ problems in farming areas and the search for solutions to these problems in station and farming areas.THE SCPC: PERENNIAL CROPSThe Scientific Coordination for Perennial Crops (SC-PC) carries out research activities for a sustai- nable development of the leading speculations: coffee, cocoa, oil palm, rubber and fruit trees to create wealth and jobs by providing other envi- ronmental services enjoyed by shrubby species. Research activities by and large aim at develo- ping high yielding varieties (quantity and qualitya major tool for food security and economicproductivity, tolerance to pests and diseases) as well as field and post-harvest crop management to produce more and better these speculations and preserve biological resources in the various sectors concerned.THE SCFSE: FOREST, SOIL AND ENVIRONMENTThe Scientific Coordination Forest, Soil and Environment (SCFSE) carries out research in order to allow the forest to ensure its economic, ecolo- gical and social functions in a participatory approach that preserves, in so doing, the inte- rests of all stakeholders; it equally allows soil resources to be managed in the best preservation of their agricultural production potential. Research activities aim at the sustainable mana- gement of biological resources, soil and water resources, preservation of the environment in general, and biodiversity in particular; the buil- ding-up of collections for research; the exploita- tion of research results by making available tech- nologies that meet users’ needs.THE SCAFP: ANIMAL AND FISHERIES PRODUCTIONScientific Coordination of Animal and Fishery Production is responsible for carrying out research to increase production and producti- vity of animal and fisheries resources, develo- ping low-cost technologies for producers, pre- serving the animal and fisheries biodiversity and for developing more productive animal genetic resources.SCPSRES: PRODUCTION SYSTEMSThe Scientific Coordination in charge of Production Systems, Rural Economics and Sociology deals mainly with IRAD’s economicand sociological dimensions of research.
