UNITED NATIONS TRUSTEESHIP
With the coming of the United Nations Organization in 1945, former territories under mandate fall under the supervision of the Trusteeship Council whose duty is to lead them through the independence process.
CAMEROON UNDER FRENCH TRUSTEESHIP
In 1957, the pace of events is quickening in Cameroon history. Pursuant to Gaston Deferre framework Law on 23rd June 1956, a French Order on 16th April 1957 set up Cameroon as self-governing State under French trusteeship.
The status changed from trust territory to trust State. Henceforth, Cameroon citizenship is reco- gnized. The High Commissioner, Pierre Messmer, acting as Head of State, appointed Andre Marie Mbida prime Minister. The latter was invested by the Legislative Assembly of Cameroon on 10th May 1957. Then 10th May becomes the national day. ALCAM also chose the flag (Green-Red-Yellow), National Anthem “O Cameroon, Thou Cradle of our Fathers” and motto “Peace-Work-Fatherland”.
In January 1958, the High Commissioner Messmer is replaced by Mr. Jean Ramadier. Following a conflict between the newly appoin- ted French representative and Prime Minister Andre Marie Mbida, the latter resigned on 13th January 1958. He is replaced on 18th January by Ahmadou Ahidjo, former Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Internal Affairs. On 12th June 1958, ALCAM voted for complete
