the Autonomous Port of Kribi. It’s worth mentio- ning the signing of a concession agreement on 25 July 2017 for the development and mainte- nance of the Container Terminal. From a purely technical point of view, we should point out that on June 22 and September 27, 2017 a commer- cial vessel berthed for the first time and loaded, with the handling equipment purchased by the State, more than 50,000 tonnes of biomass pro- duced by Hévécam. Besides, the arrival at the Port of Kribi on December 4, 2017, of the first CMA-CGM MV LETTO 220 m long container ship, definitely sanctioned the beginning of a consolidation for the effectiveness of the port.
At the Autonomous Port of Douala, we can men- tion the installation and commissioning on May 5, 2017 of a third gantry crane. The port hand- ling equipment makes it possible to increase the performance of the container terminal and thus significantly reduce the risks of congestion. Besides, the updating of tariffs at the PAD helps to meet the requirements of a modern and com- petitive port with reduced transit times.
Like the Deep-Water Port of Kribi, the construction of a port in Limbe contributes to the implementa- tion of the National Port Master Plan and is in line with the policy of Greater Achievements of the Head of State. The objective of this project is based on the region’s industrial potential.
With regard to the railway sub-sector, the actions of the Ministry of Transport consisted, in the main, in monitoring the activities of CAMRAIL within the framework of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Rail Infrastructure (COMIFER) and the Passenger
Services Committee (CTV), and those of the Cameroon-Chad Rail Commission.
In 2017, the following activities were initiated in the sub-sector: a contract for the purchase of nine (09) engines was signed; a study on the level crossings to be opened and / or conver- ted on the Transcam II; the implementation underway of the level crossing security contracts on TRANSCAM I and II funded by the World Bank; the approval by the ADB of a funding request of the feasibility studies for the project to extend the Cameroonian railway to Chad, sent by the two countries following the notes signed on July 19, 2017.
In the road sub-sector, the establishment of a mass urban transport system in Yaoundé is the main achievement of the Ministry of Transport. Under the aegis of the Ministry, the Government and a Portuguese Group have signed a contract for the establishment of a mass transit system in the Cameroonian capital. STECY Ltd Company, actually started its activities on February 13, 2017 with 40 buses.
Regarding the improvement in the system of gran- ting the driving licence, we notice some progress made in strengthening control, securing the pro- cess and computerizing driving schools files.
FUTURE CHALLENGES
Far from resting on its laurels, the Ministry of Transport has planned to consolidate achieve- ments in the course of 2018; and to work more deeply to improve the field of Transport, in its
