CAMEROON TELECOMMUNICATIONS - CAMTEL
A long-standing telecommunications operator in Cameroon, Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) is at the forefront of the fight for modernity and emergence...
CAMEROON OPENS TO THE WORLD
The technology controlled and made available by CAMTEL has opened Cameroon to the whole world for some years now. Knowledge and know-how that benefit individuals, administra- tions and businesses alike. Remarkable achieve- ments, but which in no way encourage CAMTEL to rest on the laurels garnered.
The company is now embarked on a gigantic pro- ject that is equal to the ambitions of the Cameroonian Head of State for his country in terms of economic development backed on the digital. This is the SAIL project (South Atlantic Inter
Link), an undersea cable between Cameroon and Brazil. The project, which is now reaching its crui- sing speed, is the culmination of a process that has been long and relatively difficult to conduct.
CONSOLIDATING HIGHLY STRATEGIC ASSETS
It must be noted straight away that the construc- tion and commissioning of a submarine cable between Cameroon and Brazil is part of the resolution of various issues related to the secu- rity of access routes for international telecommu- nications services in Cameroon and Central African countries.
Thus, following the granting of a loan to the State of Cameroon by Eximbank China, Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) undertook to conduct the laying of an undersea fibre optic cable between the city of Kribi (Cameroon) and that of Fortaleza (Brazil).
To help with this process, CAMTEL has partnered with China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom). The two partners agreed to build SAIL, an undersea fibre optic cable system connecting Africa directly to South America. Huawei Technologies is the technical partner for the project.
The terms of the CHINA UNICOM / CAMTEL partnership were completed in August 2016, through a construction and maintenance agree- ment (C & MA) for the cable system. The protocol sets the rules for construction and operation of the infrastructure, according to international stan- dards. In June 2017, a contract for the supply and installation of the cable system was signed with Huawei Ltd Co.
A COMPLEX PROCESS
The installation of an undersea cable is a deli- cate operation, involving several steps.
