                 ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY
Government policy as regards nature protection and the environment includes the fight against cli- mate change, pollution, nuisances and dange- rous chemical substances.
FIGHT AGAINST DESERTIFICATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE
To fight desertification and erosion, 2,500 ha of land were restored in the Far-North region in 2016. The green Sahel project has enabled the planting of 30 000 seedlings, the construction of 10 new boreholes and the distribution of 9,360 improved stoves.
SUSTAINABLE BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
In 2016, mangrove restoration in the coastal zone continued with the transplanting of 2,000

mangrove seedlings in Mouanko. To control water hyacinth and other invasive aquatic plants, 20 hectares have been cleaned and developed.
RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
To improve productivity in the agricultural sector, the actions carried out during 2016 for research and innovation are: the development of new irri- gation techniques: the development of new tech- nical itineraries to reduce the parasitic incidence on banana plantain cultivation; the production of a reference system for technologies developed and disseminated by the Agricultural Research Institute for Development (IRAD); the implementa- tion of the mapping and soil analysis project for cocoa orchards and coffees; the shortening of the fallow period; the processing of agricultural by-products (cocoa hulls, banana waste, broken cocoa) into animal feed.
