ALPILIGNUM is the key product of the ALPI Group. It is an industrial veneer created and treated in accordance with extremely modern technological processes developed exclusively by the ALPI Group in order to make it possible to reconstitute à la carte according to the customer’s request almost all the nuances of design (colour and form) of natural word. ALPILIGNUM is a wood reconstituted from tainted, glued and compacted Ayous veneer sheets in order to obtain blocks to be cut. The product obtained is exported all over the world.
This revolutionary product makes it possible to upgrade the Ayous specie and to reduce the intensive exploitation of species forbidden by the CITES convention.
This R&D programme has several natural forest aspects and must enable simultaneously the crea- tion of an Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon) planta- tion in the savannah zone.
In natural forest, the objectives of the programme are: phenological monitoring, monitoring of recons- titution (growth) and regeneration, improving deve- lopment parameters (calculation of possibility) and assessing the impact of exploitation at various inten- sities on the population. This applied research is conducted through the putting in place of perma- nent mechanisms as provided for by the CIRAD- COMIFAC reference protocol (cf. Reference manual for the installation of permanent mecha- nisms in production forest in the Congo Basin COMIFAC/CIRAD, 2008). A test will be conduc- ted including various silvicultural interventions that have as objective to promote the putting in place and increase in the natural regeneration of Ayous.
Simultaneously with this research, reforestation activi- ties in savannah-forest contact zone are carried out by ALPICAM in partnership with the Société de Transformation du Bois de la Kadey (STBK) at Batouri. This project consists in afforestation since 2009 of 1000 hectares of grassy savannah or degraded low shrub (by way of Chromoleana odo- rata) with Ayous as main specie. This indigenous forest specie and typical of semi-deciduous forest, thus well adapted to climatic conditions of the region,
is much in use in veneer factories in Cameroon, and is also that which is exploited mainly by ALPICAM for the manufacture of ALPILIGNUM.
The non-objection letter for this project was obtai- ned from the competent national authority (MINEP) on 17 March 2009. It falls within the framework of the MDG, established by the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In the long-run, this plantation managed sustainably with ayous, key local specie exploited by Alpicam and STBK, will make it possible to limit the quest for new territory to be exploited in order to supply their industries.
The installation of R&D silviculture service already allows for active collaboration between the two industrial forestry companies and certain research bodies and research departments: supervision of training, reception of researchers and sharing of data (Univ. Yaoundé 1, COFORChange/CIRAD-Forêt, PPR/IRD, ONF- International, etc.).
In the future, it is envisaged that another research aspect should be opened by the R&D service on Wood Technology and Chemistry at the head office of the parent company of ALPI in Italy ( in order to study the optimum characteristics sought for, for the industrial trans- formation of Ayous in connection with the den- drological characteristics of trees produced by sil- viculture in the reforestation project.
The ALPICAM Group attaches great value to the involvement of communities living hard by in the management of forest resources. Besides, annual forest royalty, the ALPICAM Group has contributed in the putting in place of seventeendialogue and consultation forums with the population living close to its forest concerns (Rural Forest Committees), deve- loped an internal policy for the recruitment of popu- lation living hard by, for the management of conflict and involvement of communities in its capacity buil- ding activities. Its social policy is based on a socio- economic action plan that is reinforced today through the kick-off of development micro-projects adapted to the needs of the communities and highlighted through partnerships that give priority to local skills.
The ALPICAM group also has as objective to impact on the daily lives of the population living close to its concerns. Among other themes develo- ped to assist the population and improve on their health and living conditions, that of water has taken a pride of place and is concretized through donation of boreholes to the population living close to the concerns of the ALPICAM Group n
