                 HANDICRAFT BRANCHES AND PRODUCTS
Handicrafts includes several types of activities across regions and traditions. We therefore have:
• Bronze work: a specialty by the Bamoun coun- try; their famous masks and statues are world- wide renowned;
An ancient craftsmanship know-how
• Leather work in the northern regions of the land, with major centres in Garoua and Maroua, offer a diversity of products (bags, belts, shoes, sandals, footstools, etc...) sold in specialized markets or others;
• Wood work, mostly in the West and North- West; it mainly produces masks, statues, wood panellings and beds made of carved wood, etc;
• Raffia and natural fibers in the Centre, South, West and the North-West;
• TRADITIONAL ATTIRES, ESPECIALLY IN THE FAR- NORTH, WEST AND THE NORTH-WEST;
CITIES TRADITIONALLY ASSOCIATED TO HAN- DICRAFTS
Although handicrafts is practised throughout the national territory, some localities are unique in the mastery of specific skills. The city of Maroua leads in leather and tanning; Foumban in bronze and copper items; Bamenda and Bafoussam in wood carvings, plant fiber items (raffia), bamboo and traditional costumes.
A VERY SPECIFIC KNOW-HOW
In craftsmanship, a locality deserves special mention: Foumban, the headquarters of the Bamoun kingdom, West Region. Craftsmen in the historic city are specialized in the work of bronze and copper. Using an ancient technique based on wax, they produce masks, statues, bracelets, and hundreds of other objects for export or sold to tourists.
